Violin Bow

Made in London, England

c.1830

Stamped T Tubbs

61.1g

A fine silver and ebony mounted Violin Bow by Thomas Tubbs of London, England. Round stick, made of light golden-coloured pernambuco.

The bow is in excellent condition, with mounts by William Tubbs. A gorgeous example of the early school of English bowmaking and a very characteristic specimen.
History & Provenance
First in a line of important English bow makers that gradually succeeded the Dodd family, Thomas Tubbs probably trained with either James II or Edward Dodd I. He set up his own workshop around 1830, where he worked until 1863, supplying bows to various shops, including the Dodd's, John Betts, and Thomas Kennedy, which bear those makers' brands. Tubbs employed a sheer square-head design for much of his career, and experimented with new developments emerging from France. His son William, an important maker in his own right and father of the celebrated James Tubbs assisted him and is probably partly responsible for his later works.
