A very fine French violin bow by Émile Auguste Ouchard, made in New York, USA, in 1957. Octagonal stick made of typically bold red-orange pernambuco of tight grain, mounted in silver and ebony. Strong and powerful, with bold execution and gorgeous aesthetics, this bow is a perfectly preserved example of Emile Auguste Ouchard’s prowess in the bow making world whilst he was working in America. In near-mint condition today. With certificate from Paul Childs.
History & Provenance
Émile Auguste Ouchard, (initially apprenticed under his father Émile François at Cuniot-Hury in Mirecourt) began crafting bows collaboratively, refining his style significantly by the 1930s. In 1937, he assumed his father's business but soon established his own in Paris, marked by the brand "E.A. Ouchard Paris." His craftsmanship peaked from 1940 to 1960, characterized by thicker, sturdier bow heads. Ouchard's journey led him to New York in 1946, then to Chicago with William Lewis & Son in 1948, before returning to Paris in 1960. Sadly after a stroke shortly thereafter, his work never regained its former excellence, however his bows are revered throughout the bow world as one of the two great titans of the 20th Century, the other being Eugene Sartory. Throughout his career, his stamps reflected his locations: "E.A. Ouchard Fils," "E.A. Ouchard Paris," "Émile A. Ouchard New York," and "Émile A. Ouchard."
