Violin Bow
A beautiful French violin bow by Jules Fétique, made in Paris, France, c.1925. Round stick of fiery dark red-brown Pernambuco, mounted in silver and ebony. This bow is a typical, characteristic example of the maker’s work, in excellent condition today. No evidence exists of Fétique working for Gand & Bernardel so the stamp was probably added later. Jules Fétique worked alongside Eugène Sartory for many years, and this is extremely evident in his work, all the way to 1934. With certificate from Pierre Guillaume.
History & Provenance
Jules Fétique, born in Mirecourt three years after his brother Victor, apprenticed under Émile Miquel and Charles Nicolas Bazin before joining Eugène Sartory's workshop in Paris in 1902. While his early models resembled Sartory's, some of his later works leaned towards the Peccatte school, characterized by square heads. Joining Caressa & Français in 1917, he continued to collaborate with Sartory until 1934, when he established his own firm with violin maker André Dugad. Producing a vast number of consistently high-quality bows, many were branded with Caressa & Français or Émile Français, while those made independently bore stamps like "J. Fétique," "J. Fétique à Paris," or "Jules Fétique Paris."
